Personal Thoughts

While I heard good things in general, I have been pleasantly surprised with the base brushed model of the MT10. It handles well and is both easy and fun to drive.

While I would love more power I can't complain since I got this on the recent Tower Hobbies deal for $165 after coupon/before tax and it came with the basic 3300mAh LiPo and even more basic charger. I would recommend it to anyone with younger kids or on a budget.

It lends itself to an affordable 3S brushless upgrade later since it shares all the other parts of the brushless version but the body color and LED kit.

Info

The Rival MT10 came out in Feb 2020. It is a 1:10 scale shaft-driven 4wd monster truck intended to compete with the Traxxas Stampede and Arrma Granite. Based on the same platform TA released the Pro4 SC10 in May 2021, which like previous TA Short Course Trucks competes with the Traxxas Slash 4x4 and Arrma Senton.

The differences between the MT10 and Pro4 are the chassis, bumpers/skid plates, center driveshaft, body, pinion gear, and tires. In 2023 TA released the MT10 V2, with a revised body, as well as lower-cost brushed versions of the MT10 and SC10 Pro4.

Tips

Motor upgrades

The stock motors on the brushless/brushed versions of the car are 540/550 sized. This is equivalent to 3652/3660 in metric sized motors. While a 3662 can fit, a 3665 like the current Hobbywing EZRun 3665SD G3 motor is too long and will require chassis modification to fit.

Common Fixes

By all accounts this is a very robust platform, but not without its faults. The main two problems I've seen reports of are the arms have a tendency to break, and the motor mount is weak. The RPM aftermarket arms (Front: RPM part # 72062, Rear: RPM part # 72182) are a good alternative to the stock arms. As for the motor mount, M2C makes a carbon fiber plate part #8004

Compatible Wheels and Tires

The Rival MT10 and Pro4 SC10 use standard 12mm hexes. The SC10 uses the typical "+3mm" offset for the SC10s dating back to when they first came out during the short course craze of the late 2000s. The history behind this is that they originally used "+0mm" wheel offsets, but when the SCT class rules were established, it was realized that the vehicle was 6mm under the width limit and this leaves stability on the table, so +3mm wheels were created to maximize performance while remaining within class rules. For more on the confusing world of SCT wheel offsets, see What Do Short Course Offsets Mean? **WIP**

The MT10 can use any short course wheels as well, but if you're looking for something similar in size yet different from the stock wheels/tires I suggest looking at 2.8" wheels for the Stampede/Sledgehammer or the Copperhead MT pre-mounts for the Arrma Granite Voltage (#AR550014). Amain also launched a line of 2.8" premounts with 12/14/17mm hexes
